On 18 December 2009 in Zagreb the 7th Energy Community Ministerial Council approved the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the Energy Community.
"The accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the Energy Community Treaty will catalyze energy sector reforms in these countries which will result in a mutually beneficial enlarged energy market based on common rules. This could help in particular Ukraine, an important transit country, to upgrade its infrastructure. The enlargement process plays an important role in reaching the EU's energy security objectives and contributes to the security of these countries." stated Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
The accession will be effective when Ukraine and Moldova make their gas laws comply with the EU Directive 2003/55/EC and complete their respective ratification procedures as it is mentioned in the press-release of the Energy Community.
The accession of Ukraine to the Energy Community will provide transparent and predictable mechanisms of energy tariffs, facilitate investment in industry and will enable more efficient use of existing export potential.
