On 23 June 2010 Minister for Fuel and Energy of Ukraine Yuriy Boyko met in Brussels with EU Commissioner for Energy Günter Oettinger.
The parties discussed implementation by the Ukrainian side of the commitments to reform its energy sector taken in order to get membership in the Energy Community. Issues of EU financial aid for the modernization of the GTS and position of the European Commission and of EU energy companies on construction of new gas pipelines to Europe were also discussed at the meeting .
Y.Boyko emphasized that Ukraine is implementing measures to reform its gas market. “We have had a fruitful discussion, as the Government of Ukraine has adopted and sent to the Parliament a very important draft of gas law, which was a milestone in the issues of modernization of the Ukrainian GTS and in the formation of gas market”, he said.
He assured that Ukraine is ready to pursue the dialogue with the European Commission and international financial organizations on modernization of the Ukrainian GTS. “Ukrainian gas transportation system meets technical requests and is the most economically profitable for transporting the Russian gas to the European Union”, - Yuriy Boyko stressed. This route is advantageous for all parties and consumers”, he said.
The Minister emphasized that Ukraine needs guarantees of the volumes of gas to be pumped from Russia to Europe through the Ukrainian GTS. “What we need is commitments of all sides that this route is going to be exploited. That is why we have a constant dialogue with our Russian colleagues and with the European Commission”, the Minister said.
