Due to the dangerous escalation of tensions in Crimea (Ukraine ), which leads to a real threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, Representative of Ukraine to the EU Kostyantyn Yelisieiev sent a letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton with the proposition to convene an extraordinary meeting EU Foreign Affairs Council with the view to take immediate action to stop the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine .
K.Yelisieiev also initiated the inclusion of this issue to the agenda of AFET scheduled for 3-4 March 2014 in Brussels.
The Mission of Ukraine to the EU also continues the intensive consultations with the EU Military Committee and with the Ambassadors of the leading EU countries to the Political and Security Committee of the EU.
On February 28 the abovementioned topic was also the subject of a telephone conversation between the President of the European Commission J.M.Barroso and the Prime Minister of Ukraine A. Yatsenyuk as well as between the President of the European Council H.Van Rompuy and the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. It is also expected to become one of the key issues during the visit of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton to Kyiv on 3 March 2014.
