Comment by the Representative of Ukraine to the EU on adoption of the European Parliament Resolution on the State of Democracy in Russia
The Resolution on the State of Democracy in Russia adopted by the European Parliament on 12 March is another manifestation of undeniable support of Ukraine by leading European political forces in its fighting against ongoing Russian aggression that put at stake sovereignty of our state but also values and principles of the European community.
Along with a request of the European Parliament for an independent investigation into the murder of Borys Nemtsow, we hope for that the Russian authorities will finally listen to the position of the EU and will take steps to end propaganda campaign as well as nationalist euphoria built on the annexation of Crimea and an escalating war in the Donbas.
It is telling that the European Parliament has once again stress on the necessity to release Nadiya Savchenko having reminded the Russian side about responsibility it bears for her state of health. A strong voice of the European parliamentarians has become yet one substantial contribution to the international campaign launched to release Nadiya Savchenko as well as other Ukrainian citizens being illegally detained in the territory of the Russian Federation.
It is worth mentioning that despite all efforts the Russian side failed to conceal violation of right of the Crimean Tatars community in the occupied Crimea.
We do hope for that this principled position of the European parliamentarians will be reflected and even strengthened during further discussions at the level of the EU Member States leadership.
