The visit began with a prayer for Ukraine in the European Parliament prayer room. Together with His Holiness following people participated in the prayer: Patriarchal Assistant, Patriarchal Patron of the Periaslavsk and Belotserkovsk- Epiphanius, Archbishop of Rivne and Ostrohsky - Hilarion, Archbishop of Chernihiv and Nizhyn – Yevstatiy. Among others Representative of Ukraine to the EU Mykola Tochytskyi, relatives of Ukrainian political prisoners held by the Kremlin, MEPs and mass media were present.
The Ukrainian delegation headed by the Patriarch participated in the international conference titled "The Human Cost of Russian Aggression in Ukraine: Testimonies of Abductions, Torture and Murder," as well as "Ukraine during its Independence: the view of the Kyiv Orthodox Church Patriarchate on a Changing Society" (with the participation of the EU Commissioner for ENP and enlargement negotiations Hahn) and met with high-level European officials.
The key topics of the meetings were the EU's support for Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, creation of a Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine, as well as in increasing the pressure on the Russian Federation through sanctions.
During his visit, the Patriarch met with High Representative of the EU for foreign affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini, members of the European People's Party and its chairman Joseph Daul, head of the EP informal group "Friends of European Ukraine" MEP Petras Auštrevičius, MEP Michael Gahler and other members of the EP.
A number of MEPs were awarded by the Medal of St. Volodymyr for the development of cooperation between the Kyiv Patriarchate and the European Parliament and promoting intercultural and interreligious dialogue: First Vice-President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness (Ireland), co-chairman of the EPP working group on Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue Jan Olbrycht (Poland), MEP Michael Gahler.
On May 3d His Holiness Patriarch Filaret with the hierarchs of the Kyiv Patriarchate visited the Ukrainian soldiers who are currently undergoing treatment in the Military Hospital named after Queen Astrid (Brussels, Belgium.) Patriarch also met with the Ukrainian community at the Embassy of Ukraine in Belgium.
