The expansion of Russia’s military machine poses a threat to the entire transatlantic community, so allies must deprive Russia of resources, in particular by reducing oil revenues, and sanctions can no longer be delayed.

This was stated by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Tuesday, July 15, during an online speech at the EU Foreign Affairs Council.

The Minister began his speech with detailed information about the latest Russian strikes on Ukraine and the urgent need to strengthen the air shield over Ukraine.

“We see that Russia rejects peace efforts and instead intensifies terror. Moscow aims to achieve three goals: to gain time to continue the war, to delay the imposition of sanctions, and to push the U.S. out of peace efforts,” the Minister said.

Andrii Sybiha emphasized that Moscow must not be allowed to achieve these goals and called on allies to take concrete steps to strengthen Ukraine and collective defense, increase transatlantic pressure on the aggressor, and advance Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“What is usually called EU enlargement is in fact reunification. We are returning to where we have always belonged — to Europe. Accession negotiations must be merit-based and not be blocked for political reasons. The swift opening of the first cluster and other clusters is Ukraine’s top priority. This is not just a symbolic gesture, but a practical necessity. We are doing our part and expect the EU to do the same,” the Minister stated.

Andriy Sybiha stressed that Ukraine needs parity with Russia in military potential and the defense industry. “We need to achieve greater self-sufficiency, and the country’s rapidly growing defense industry has significant potential for further expansion,” he noted.

In this context, the Foreign Minister called on European allies to increase investment in Ukraine’s defense industry, particularly in drone production, and emphasized the mutual benefit of this cooperation.

“Clarity on key decisions brings peace closer. And we strive for peace more than anyone. A just, comprehensive, and lasting peace for Ukraine. I am confident that Denmark’s presidency of the EU has the will to take the right steps. The time to act is now. For a safe, peaceful, and prosperous Europe,” the Minister stated.
