Commissioner J.Potočnik welcomed key strategic documents of the Ukrainian environmental policy – the Strategy of the State Environmental Policy of Ukraine till 2020 and the National Action Plan on Environmental Protection for 2011-2015. J.Potočnik emphasized that the EU is ready to continue supporting Ukraine in the harmonization of legislation.
Minister of ecology and natural resources of Ukraine O.Proskuriakov and Environment Commissioner J.Potočnik discussed further ways of interaction within the international environmental conventions namely, the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention), the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention), the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea Against Pollution (Bucharest Convention). Minister O.Proskuriakov confirmed willingness of Ukraine to host the meeting of the Parties to the Espoo Convention in 2014.
Minister of ecology and natural resources of Ukraine O.Proskuriakov and Environment Commissioner J.Potočnik emphasized on the importance of green economy, climate change interaction, taking into account potential impacts of shale gas extraction on the environment as well as establishing branch office of the REC for Central and Eastern Europe in Ukraine.
