On 5 February, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha held a meeting with a delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, led by Chair Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
The Minister thanked the representatives of the European Parliament for their consistent solidarity and unwavering support for Ukraine in countering Russia’s full-scale aggression, as well as for the European Parliament’s active role in shaping a common European position in support of Ukraine.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the importance of further strengthening comprehensive pressure on the Russian Federation, in particular by reinforcing the sanctions regime.
Andrii Sybiha stressed the critical need for Ukraine to urgently receive additional air defence systems to protect Ukrainian airspace and civilians.
The Minister called on the European Parliament to promote greater involvement of EU Member States in the implementation of joint projects under the European SAFE instrument, underlining Ukraine’s readiness not only to receive support but also to directly engage in joint production, procurement and development of Europe’s defence capabilities.
“Ukraine is consistently moving towards strengthening its own strategic autonomy and sees itself as an integral part of the future European security architecture. Despite all challenges, we continue to move forward, strengthening our defence capabilities and contributing to Europe’s security. A strong Ukraine is the foundation of a stable and secure Europe,” Andrii Sybiha stressed.
The Minister also emphasised that Ukraine must receive reliable and legally binding security guarantees from its partners. He separately noted that ensuring the inevitability of accountability for the Russian aggressor and securing compensation for the damage inflicted on Ukraine are integral components of a future just and sustainable peace.
