The conference in Brussels would be a part of a broader program of commemorative events in Ukraine and throughout the world on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of one of the biggest tragedies of the 20th century. In order to prevent such crimes against humanity in the future, it is crucial to restore the historical truth about the Holodomor.

The conference will focus on the causes and consequences of the Holodomor not only as regards Ukraine, but also in the broader context of the European history.

Prominent scholars and officials from Ukraine and the EU will participate at the conference. Zdzisław Krasnodębski, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Sandra Kalniete, Member of the European Parliament, and Taja Vovk van Gaal, Creative Director of the House of European History, will deliver opening remarks at the event.

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin will deliver a keynote speech.

Member of the European Parliament, Co-Chair of Euronest Rebecca Harms will take part at the panel discussion of the conference.

Petras Auštrevičius, Member of the European Parliament, head of an Informal Group in the European Parliament “Friends of European Ukraine” will make concluding remarks.

The discussion will be moderated by Ihor Chocholak, President of the Association of Ukrainians in Belgium.

The Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine was a dark tragic page of the European history, which was almost unknown to the broad public and international community as the totalitarian regime hid its crimes behind a wall of lies. It is high time to highlight the truth about the Holodomor and pay a decent tribute to all those who suffered in this horrific tragedy.

Holodomor was a man-made artificial famine in Ukraine in 1932 – 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians. The leadership of the Soviet Union sought to physically eliminate Ukrainians, Ukrainian opposition and thus oppress any efforts to build an independent Ukrainian State. In 2006, the Holodomor was recognized as genocide against the Ukrainian people by the Law of Ukraine "About the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine".
